“Tohru, get up already! You're going to be late!”

I open my eyes to the nostalgic voice of my mom.
It felt like I slept for an eternity or something like that.
More than that, it really feels as if I was revived.
I rub my eyes and look around.
My current surroundings are unfamiliar to me.
This isn't my one bedroom apartment, but it feels so familiar.

“Could this be…
my room at my parent's house?”

This is definitely the second storey and 6 tatami mat wide room from my parent's house.
Posters of popular bands are plastered on the wall, which is something a band kid would have.
Not only are there dictionaries and reference books on the shelves, I spot manga, novels, and music scores tightly packed within.
This is definitely the stuff I would put in my room.

The last thing I remember before I lost consciousness was my constant drinking in my one bedroom apartment.
And then, the news of Shigure Narahara jumping from her balcony hit.
I must have drank too much, because I can't really remember too much after that.

“Huh? So I came back to my parents house after I got wasted?”

That seems like the logical conclusion here.
I must have been so wasted that I somehow hopped on the train or a taxi and some kind of force was pulling me all the way back to my parent's house.
And it would be reasonable to assume that I would rest on he futon until I sobered up.
But I drank so much and my body feels so refreshed for some reason.
I usually feel like shit the day after I drink, but I don't feel any of the pain at all right now.
It's so weird.

I come to my senses and search myself for any of my valuables.
Because I was drunk, I could have easily lost my wallet or phone.
It'd be a pain in the ass if I lost them along the way.

“Damn it…
where the hell is my phone?”

I search for my phone all over my body, but I find nothing.
I probably did lose it along the way.
While it's not life or death if I lose my phone, it's still a major inconvenience.
especially considering the cost to replace one.

I look around my room, and I see a phone on the desk connected to a charging cable.
I breathe a sigh of relief, but then I'm hit with another strange feeling.

“I don't use an old model like this…”

That model is probably one from 10 years ago.
I remember it well, since it's the model I used in high school.
However, that phone over there looks like it's in mint condition.
There's no way it's been used for 10 years straight.

I hesitantly press the power button.
The display shows the time as “6:37 a.m.”, with the date being “Tuesday, April 3rd”.
The wallpaper is a picture of our former pet, the shiba, Pero.

“April 3rd? No way, it was still August yesterday.
Is this phone broken or something…?”

I wouldn't be surprised if a 10 year old phone stopped working.
But the display definitely says “April 3rd”.
I think about it even more, and it's weirdly chilly for an August morning.
And I'm wearing long sleeves.

For a moment I wonder if I suddenly woke up in April of next year.
Was I really out for 8 months straight? Or did I have some sort of memory loss instead? So many different possibilities are swarming through my head.
No answer jumps out to me as correct, but regardless, I really don't have a clue about my current situation.

I look over to the mirror, as I feel my sense of distress growing by the second.
What I see staring back at me is, of course, myself.
There's no way simply looking at myself would make me feel perturbed.
However, my skin looks a bit more glossy and my face is a bit sharper.
There's none of the swelling from the alcohol.
Did I really improve that much physically by living a healthy lifestyle at my parent's house?

I see my high school uniform by my reflection.
Damn, that brings me back.
It even looks new, as if it was bought recently.
At 26, I don't need a new uniform like this.
I'd understand if my mom wanted to keep it in the back of the closet, but there's no point putting it in front of the mirror.
A single hypothesis starts forming in my mind based on everything I've seen so far.
Which means…

“Did I somehow find myself back in my high school days?”

I have no actual scientific evidence for this, but my gut feeling is telling me this is the case.
But this just seems so absurd and out of this world.
I need some actual proof before I can determine if my hypothesis is right or not.

“Tohru, come down already! Breakfast won't be here all day!”

I hear my mom trying to herd me downstairs.
If I did find myself back in my high school days, my mom calling me like this in order to hurry to school would be no surprise.
Either way, I should find some hard proof in either direction if I head downstairs.
So, I make my way to the kitchen and the scene before my eyes is enough to convince me I found myself back in my high school days.

“Good morning, Tohru.
Looks like you overslept today too.”

“M-morning, sister…”

“What's up? You're acting pretty strange, Tohru.”

“Haha, w-what do you mean…?”

No matter how much I mask my shock with a calm face, some sort of uneasiness will leak through.
I mean, standing right me is my sister, who got married years ago and should be living with her husband.
But here she is, in her high school uniform eating breakfast here.
Besides, another incident immediately following quite literally hit me, confirming my hypothesis.

“Woof!”

“O-oh, hey Pero.”

Wagging his tail by my feet is our beloved pet shiba, Pero.
This is the final nail in the coffin on my hypothesis.
Pero passed away a little bit before I graduated high school.
If he's alive, that means I must have gone back in time.

I found myself in the past.

“Come on, Tohru.
You better eat quickly or you'll be late.
It'll be embarrassing as a parent if you're already late for your second day of school.”

My mom shamelessly eggs me on to hurry up.
This sort of back and forth that was so annoying before already feels so nostalgic.

“G-got it.
Thanks for the food.”

I started eating the 5 cm thick slices of bread, a common sight in my house during my high school days.
As I'm eating my bread, it finally hits me that I'm back in high school.

I've been granted a second chance at life.
