At the sight of his lowered head, the nobles of the capital saw it fit to treat delegates of the East like beggars.

On that particular day, his request to meet the king was rejected and he had been kicked out of the royal palace.

Kalix had been leaving the royal palace with weak steps when he heard a clear, ringing laugh from the garden.
When he turned, he saw a beautiful girl with gentle curls and a bright smile.

At the sight of her brown hair with a slight reddish hue, Kalix thought he was seeing a still warm ember.

‘She seems to be the second daughter of the newly appointed noble, Viscount Liart.’

That girl was Amber, and she was wearing a brooch that looked to be worth 3 months of the salary of Duke of Thales.

‘So there are people who live like that.’

It was like they were from completely different worlds.

Like their relationship was nothing but a moment passing the other, to never meet again.

And yet she was to be his wife.

After calming down, the next thing he felt was worry.

‘How will I be able to afford her lifestyle?’

Kalix did not hold much in possession.

Though he had become a duke after the marriage was formalized, it was common knowledge that it was nothing but a title in name.
The Eastern Lands were facing a drought and financial crisis, it was in an even worse state than it was when he requested relief from the emperor.

‘I won’t even be able to afford an inch of the lace on her dress.’

When he had received news that Amber had started her journey, a powerful desire to flee from responsibility filled Kalix’s being.

It culminated into an impulsive decision to leave for battle.
The desire to head to the battlefield only grew when he saw Amber get off the carriage.

The young girl who smiled beautifully in the luscious garden was now emanating worry and fear.
Even so, she stood with her head held high.
Though the hands holding her dress were shaking terribly, she maintained her elegance as she made her way forward.

Her soft and white skin that hadn’t faced the harsh winds of the land.
Her brown hair that held a hint of red resembling a glowing ember.

She didn’t belong in the desolate East.

Kalix couldn’t handle his beautiful and precious wife.
He didn’t have any confidence to do so.

Suddenly, he had felt so embarrassed for the goods that he prepared for the marriage.
He wouldn’t have been able to bear the sight of her disappointment at his pathetic wealth.

‘With her dowry, she’ll be able to live well on her own, even if I’m gone for months to subjugate monsters.’

There was not even a moment to consider just how terrible his actions were.

‘And if I can mine monster cores in this subjugation and sell them to the magic tower… I’ll be able to earn at least a year’s worth of living expenses for her.’

A monster core was extremely difficult to obtain and took a significant amount of money to process into something usable.
It wasn’t a particularly useful resource that held much use outside of research, and even then there weren’t many that were interested in its research.
The mages of the tower though, were sure to have precious jewels they were willing to trade for the core.

But when he heard that Bella took his wife’s dowry, Kalix felt as if the sky had crashed down on him.

Even though he knew that he should be respectful to Bella who is his father’s newly wedded wife, he still felt his face stiffen with anger.
His father even requested him to treat her nicely, yet Kalix still pushed Bella violently in front of everyone to see.

‘Perhaps I shouldn’t have involved myself.’

Kalix had immediately regretted it.
The sight of Amber’s bewildered face as she stared at him was a sure sign of her discontentment at his intervention.

Ever since he was young, Kalix was taught that women hated when men tried to involve themselves in household affairs.
