This Boss Has a Bit of a Background (1)

The old butler shouted, and then two servants rushed out from behind the wall.
It looks like they’re resorting to force.

Ding Yi rolled her eyes.
So you’re trying to assault me with just two strong men.
Heh, you don’t know the strength of the little Jingang* princess?!

*(Vajradhara, a Buddhist deity known for its profound strength)

Come at me!

When the old butler saw Ding Yi swiftly knock down the two muscular men, his face went purple, expression convulsing intensely.
He looked at Ding Yi as if she were some monster and quickly backpedaled with uneven steps.

Ding Yi looked at him with scorn.
Peh*! A loser local bully who only knows how to pick on the weak!

*(She’s spitting at him mentally, or perhaps physically)

The system came out to stop her when it felt that it was necessary: Don’t overdo it.
If you knock him out, who will take you to the Liu manor?

Ding Yi already knew that.
She just wanted to teach the old butler a lesson, so she didn’t actually hit him, only warning him menacingly: “Don’t think I’m easy to take advantage of! It’s enough to trick me into buying this house.
If you try anything funny, I’ll just watch you get ripped apart by the ghost!”

While saying that, she lifted up the old butler by the collar, and something that looked like a small snuff bottle fell out of his clothes.

Ho, rich people sure are treacherous.

Ding Yi didn’t even need to guess to know that the bottle probably contained some sort of knockout drug.
They probably wanted to knock her out and kidnap her!

The old butler couldn’t hold up pretenses any longer and broke into tears, begging: “Young lady, spare me! This old codger has gone senile with panic! I used the wrong method.
Please, please visit the manor, just once! Every minute is a minute where someone could die…”

Ding Yi scoffed coldly: “If you know how to beg, then behave!”

“Yes, yes, yes!”

Ding Yi didn’t want to waste any more words with him.
She roughed him up a bit, and after she felt it was enough, she let him go, telling him to lead the way.
She had considered leaving Mu Yueshi behind, but feeling that the haunted house wasn’t any safer, brought him along as well.

Along the way, the rat-like old butler secretly glanced at the unearthly beautiful little boy following Ding Yi, his eyes slightly hesitant.

Mu Yueshi immediately discovered the old butler’s gaze.
While keeping his face expressionless, he slowly lifted up his eyes, his gaze cold and sinister.

The boy’s gaze sent inexplicable shivers down the old butler’s spine.
This strange brother and sister pair sure are a freaky bunch, he thought to himself.
They both seem tough.
Hopefully they’re the right people for the job.

The old butler hurriedly retracted his sight and kept up his pace, keeping his head and back down.

The Liu manor is on the east side of the city, far away from the noisy main street market and in the complete opposite direction of the haunted house.

The Liu manor didn’t have an impressive name, but the size wasn’t small.
It was obvious that they had some wealth.
The Liu character on the plaque hanging from the front door was embossed in gold paint.
It looked impressive but also reeked of bronze* and opulence.

*(The wen is a bronze coin, reeking of bronze means that someone is very vain and material)

Ding Yi lifted her head to examine the plaque, and her brows knit even tighter.

The cheat that the system gave her was already active, and so what she saw was a little surreal…

The gold embossed door plaque radiated a black aura, and the magnificently written Liu character was seeping out black blood…

The dark and heavy evil aura was practically choking.
How was this something that happened just a few days ago?!

Ding Yi was stupefied.

It was obvious that something went wrong with the Liu manor a long time ago.
To have found out only now, these people must be blind!

Ding Yi, in her daze, felt her sleeve being pulled.
She recovered her thoughts and looked towards the quiet and obedient Mu Yueshi: “What’s wrong?”

Mu Yueshi suddenly said: “There’s a ghost here, it’s true.
This manor is filled with the aura of death, we shouldn’t go inside.”

The old butler felt goosebumps sprouting all over his back.
Afraid that Ding Yi might change her mind, he begged her while sobbing: “Young lady, young lady! You’re already here, please don’t leave us to die!!”

While he spoke, he started getting on his knees again, but Ding Yi didn’t want to deal with this again, so she shook her hand: “Alright, alright! Then hurry up and lead the way!”

The old butler didn’t want to waste any more time, and he hurriedly invited her inside.

After Ding Yi entered the inner courtyard, she discovered that the dark aura was denser the further she went inside, especially in the room of the sick Esquire Liu.
She could see a black mist wafting out from behind the silk screens, further adding to her unease.

Inside was a group of beautiful wives and concubines, sobbing.
All of them cried and begged Ding Yi like she was some sort of messiah, causing her a great deal of headache.

In the end, Ding Yi was finally able to piece together the entire story from the scattered accounts.
They say that Esquire Liu suddenly fell into a coma one day, and no doctor could treat him.
He would only wake up during the middle of the night, and when he woke up, he seemed to have a few screws loose, sometimes going around scaring people, sometimes crying and talking to himself.

In summary, he was possessed.

As for why the Liu family came to her? It’s because the ghost possessing Esquire Liu is the same cursed thing from the haunted house!

So the Liu family, at their wits end, could only vest their hopes in Ding Yi, who spent a night at the haunted house and came out with nary a scratch.

Ding Yi walked into the inner room and saw Esquire Liu lying on the bed, emaciated and sheet white.
She quietly asked Mu Yueshi: “Can you see anything?”

“Nothing,” said Mu Yueshi, shaking his head, his eyes hiding a thin cold shadow: “But I can feel it.
This room smells disgusting and so does the outside.”

As expected.

Even though Ding Yi can see the mist-like black aura of death, her instincts were far inferior when compared to the little demon.
If the boss can feel it, then that means the ghost is somewhere nearby!

Since she was able to narrow down a target, Ding Yi was able to follow a direction in the black aura.
