Chapter 88: Benefactor (1)

Chen Shu was startled by Ye Sui’s sudden move and did not respond for a long time.

Ye Sui, who was in a drunken state and not in the right mind, noticed that Chen Shu didn’t hold her for a long time.
With grievance, she opened her mouth to say, “Chen Shu, hug me.”

Her drunken appearance was completely different from usual.
Before she would act meek in front of him, but now, she had a complaint in her eyes.

She seemed to be wondering why he did not hold her.

Chen Shu had no idea what was happening; he could only follow Ye Sui’s words.
He reached out and patted her back.

“Ye Sui, be obedient.”

When Chen Shu did this, Ye Sui’s mood improved instantly.
Her eyes curved into a smile, and then she put forward more excessive demands.

“Chen Shu, carry me on your back.”

Chen Shu: “…”

Chen Shu looked at Ye Sui’s posture of never giving up until he carried her on his back, sighed helplessly, and bent down.
“Come on.”

Ye Sui quickly rode on Chen Shu’s back.
Her hands hooked on his neck, and she put her head to his side face, her breath almost sticking to his ear.

When Ye Sui opened her mouth to speak near his ear, he turned stiff.

“Chen Shu, drive!”

Chen Shu did not know whether to laugh or cry at her actions.
Since Ye Sui was drunk, she was ignorant of her actions.
Making sure that she had settled down on his back, he slowly stood up.

Ye Sui was very light.
When Chen Shu got to his feet, he could hardly feel the weight.

In a second, Ye Sui was restless again.
She commanded Chen Shu without a care in the world, “I want to eat oranges; carry me to the kitchen.”

Chen Shu obediently went to the kitchen with her on his back.
Ye Sui went down and began to peel an orange.

“Chen Shu, say ah.” Ye Sui moved the first flake of peeled orange to Chen Shu’s mouth.

As soon as Chen Shu opened his mouth, Ye Sui put the orange in, causing him to subconsciously taste it.
The orange is sweet.

Seeing that Chen Shu had taken a bite, Ye Sui also began to eat oranges while directing him, “I want to go there.
Carry me.”

“And there too.”

Where Ye Sui’s hand pointed to, Chen Shu would follow.
He had no complaint at all as he carried her around the house.

Ye Sui suddenly called out, “Chen Shu.”

“Where are we going?” Chen Shu asked.

Ye Sui didn’t speak.
Instead, she turned her head over, leaned her face on Chen Shu’s shoulder, and turned quiet.

Chen Shu waited for a while but didn’t hear Ye Sui speak.
Feeling strange, he looked at her and happened to meet her eyes.

The lights on top were like colorful twinkling stars in the sky, which fell into Ye Sui’s eyes.
Her eyes were bright as she looked at Chen Shu quietly.

Chen Shu’s breathing stagnated.
“Ye Sui, how—”

Before his words finished, Ye Su suddenly approached, and the distance between the two disappeared.
Her lips stuck to his, the soft touch lingering there.

Ye Sui was drunk and had no control over her strength.
Although intending to kiss, It was more like hitting his lips, causing her to frown in pain.

She neared again, to make up for the regret just now.
She moved her lips and kissed him awkwardly.

Chen Shu didn’t remember the kiss he had with Ye Sui before, so he thought this was their first kiss.

He was utterly frozen, his breath stuck in his lungs, and the air around evaporated.
It seemed as if one more second passed, he would suffocate and die.

Chen Shu’s voice turned hoarse, and he called Ye Sui’s name with difficulty, “Ye Sui.”

Chapter 88: Benefactor (2)

As soon as he finished speaking, Chen Shu found that Ye Sui rested her head on his shoulder, closed her eyes, and began to breathe gently.

After kissing Chen Shu, Ye Sui actually just fell asleep.

Chen Shu sighed helplessly.
He carried her into the room, opened the quilt, and carefully put her on the bed.

After covering the quilt, he did not leave immediately.
He sat on the edge of the bed, looked at her for a while, then stood up and went out of the room.

When Ye Sui woke up, her first reaction was a severe headache.
Her hangover made her feel terrible.

Ye Sui sat up and touched her lips; there was a sharp pain.
Why was it hurting again?

Before getting out of bed, she received a phone call from Renjie, informing her that she needed to arrive early for an event, as it had been moved up.

When Ye Sui came out of the room, she found that Chen Shu was sitting on the sofa in the living room.
She almost staggered to the ground.

Didn’t Chen Shu say he would return in the afternoon? Why did he arrive in the morning?

Hearing Ye Sui’s movement, Chen Shu looked up at her.
Ye Sui glanced at the picture on the wall and immediately explained, “I was afraid; therefore, I posted your picture on the wall.”

Seeing Ye Sui’s reaction returning to usual, Chen Shu’s eyes flickered slightly.
“I don’t mind.”

In Chen Shu’s presence, Ye Sui acted like a thief.
She put away all the cameras and locked them in the cupboard.
She had no time right now, so she would watch them when she came back.

Ye Sui didn’t know that Chen Shu had witnessed the whole event last night and no longer needed to watch it.

In recent days, a piece of news suddenly spread that the painting in Wei Ji’s exhibition was lost—the painting of a woman.

It was one of Wei Ji’s most famous paintings, and its loss had aroused great discussion.

The police immediately called up the surveillance video, but strangely, the video turned into white.
It was impossible to find out who had stolen the painting.

Moreover, the exhibition’s security had always been tight, so no one could tell how the painting disappeared.

Some people said that this picture was a bit strange at first.
Sometimes, it was obviously laughing, and other times, it looked like it was crying.
Could this disappearance be a supernatural phenomenon?

Some people said that Wei Ji was emotionally attached to the painting, and he would not hesitate to spend a lot of money to find it back.

On the way home, Ye Sui also saw the news, but she did not think much.
She kept looking at her cell phone beside Chen Shu, who was driving.

In the parking lot, Ye Sui opened the suitcase and widened her eyes in surprise.
The painting that disappeared was lying there.

Ye Sui took a few steps back.
At this moment, a shadow floated on the painting, which was the woman on the canvas.

The ghost looked at Ye Sui.
“Miss Ye, I know you can see me.
Could you do me a favor?”

Chen Shu also came over from behind and asked, “What’s the matter?”

Ye Sui was about to speak when the ghost started to beg, “I want to see Wei Ji.
Please help me.”

Ye Sui waved her hand at Chen Shu.
She looked at the ghost and voiced her doubts, “Are you Wei Ji’s wife?”

“I’m not.”

Ye Sui felt strange.
If so, why did Wei Ji only paint this woman in all his life?

The ghost continued, “We had an appointment to elope, but he missed it.”

“I want to see Wei Ji not because I am worried about him.
I just wanted to know why he abandoned me that year.
If I don’t make peace with it, I will not be at ease,” she coldly added.

Ye Sui thought that although it sounded like the ghost did not care about Ji Wei at all, there was still a hidden concern for him in her eyes.

As if by being indifferent, she was trying to hide her feelings.

“OK, I’ll take you there.”

Chapter 88: Benefactor (3)

The portrait ghost bowed to Ye Sui.
“Sorry to bother you” After that, she went inside the painting.

Chen Shu had a friend named Meng Han.
He was his private doctor and was well-known in the medical field.
Chen Shu asked him about Wei Ji’s injury.

Meng Han said Wei Ji was not seriously injured and was now in a private nursing home.

Chen Shu asked Meng Han to tell Wei Ji that his portrait had been found, and they wanted to give it to him in person.
As soon as Wei Ji heard this, he immediately agreed.

Ye Sui and Chen Shu took the painting and came to the private nursing home.
She knocked on the door of the ward.
The door soon opened, and Wei Ji stood there.
“Please come in.”

Wei Ji’s hand was still wrapped in gauze as he asked anxiously, “Where is my painting?”

Ye Sui handed the portrait to Wei Ji, whose eyes lit up.
His hands were trembling while caressing the painting as if it was his most precious thing.

“Finally found you,” he murmured.

Ye Sui suddenly said, “Master Wei, I know the woman in the painting.”

Wei Ji looked up.
“Miss Ye, what do you mean…”

“She is dead.”

Seeing that Wei Ji didn’t believe her words, Ye Sui said, “I’ll prove it to you.”

She glanced at the painting ghost.
Then, the woman in the painting floated out of thin air.

When Wei Ji saw this strange event happening in front of him, he asked, “She is in the painting now, isn’t she?”

Ye Sui nodded.
“She has something to ask you.”

“Why did you miss the appointment that year?” asked the ghost.

Ye Sui conveyed the meaning of the portrait ghost.
Wei Ji’s expression turned complicated.
Just as he was about to speak, the ghost began to talk to him, “We agreed to meet, but I was locked in by my family before I went out.
They objected to us being together.

“I tried my best to fight against my family and barely escaped.
Then I was told that you had a marriage contract with someone.
I became desperate, not wanting to believe it.

“I went to you at once, but you had moved away and avoided me.”

She had been struggling to keep their relationship together, but he ruthlessly abandoned their feelings and wholly disappointed her.

Hearing these words, Wei Ji was shocked.
This was nothing like he imagined.

The ghost sighed.
“People said that Wei Ji had drawn a portrait of his lover.
I was furious.
At that time, he had abandoned me for this woman.
I wanted to see who she was.”

But when she saw the painting, she saw her face.

The ghost laughed, but she seemed sorrowful.
“Master Wei, what are you doing? Do you feel guilt? Do you think you can redeem yourself in this way?”

Others thought she was Wei Ji’s lover, but she clearly knew he didn’t love her.
Otherwise, how could he miss their appointment?

“I was attached to the painting day by day, not wanting to leave, as if I could deceive myself that I was the one that Wei Ji loved.”

“When others come to see the painting, they all point at me and say that this must be Master Wei’s lover.
But I know that it’s all a lie.”

She stubbornly refused to leave, even though she knew that her love was one-sided and it was all a lie she had made up.

She still loved him like before, even after becoming a ghost.

Earlier, Ye Sui didn’t know why the woman in the painting cried, but hearing the truth now, it became clear.
The more others said he loved her, the more depressed she became.

Over time, her emotions were reflected in the painting.
Initially a smiling portrait slowly turned into sadness.

The portrait ghost hid tears in the corner of her eyes.
“I knew where his home was, but I hated him, and for years, no matter what happened, I wouldn’t take a step in.”

But when she knew that Wei Ji had an accident, she still wanted to come back to him quickly and cared for him.
Years of resentment were not important in the face of life and death.

After Wei Ji heard this, he sighed.
“In those days, I always thought it was you who didn’t want to be with me.

“When I went to the appointment, I didn’t see you.
Instead, a letter came from you.
You told me that my family was too poor to be with you.”

The portrait ghost was shocked.
She had never written such a letter.

Wei Ji slowly narrated, “Still, I didn’t give up.
I waited for one more day, but you didn’t come.
My family took me away by force.
When I got back, I kept thinking, ‘Didn’t you think I was poor?’ Then I’ll prove it to you.

“Later, I became a famous painter, and everyone said that my painting’s value was inestimable.” Wei Ji smirked.
“But what’s the point of that? You are no longer with me.”

Chapter 88: Benefactor (4)

Wei Ji looked at the air and muttered, “I hate you, but I hate myself even more.
You were so ruthless, yet I have been thinking of you for so many years.”

The ghost’s eyes flashed.

Wei Ji continued, “Every year, I will draw a portrait of you.
These paintings were never exhibited; instead, I kept them in my home.”

With each painting, his thoughts of her grew a little deeper.
However, the more he missed her, the more he would remember her ruthlessness, and the cycle would continue.

Besides, Wei Ji’s bed had several things on it, but they were covered with cloth.
As soon as  Ye Sui entered the door, she had noticed it.

Wei Ji reached out and lifted the cloth.
Below were some paintings, each one depicting the same woman—her smile and her anger.

Her joys and sorrows were reflected in his paintings.
It was as if these paintings showed the years they had missed.

The ghost was in a daze at the moment, and her tears fell like a waterfall.

Ye Sui could see that there were faint black burn marks on the painting.
Could it be that…

At this time, Wei Ji’s voice sounded.
“Some time ago, my house caught fire unexpectedly.
My first reaction was to save the paintings.

“She is no longer with me, so I can’t lose these paintings.”

Ye Sui glanced at Chen Shu, and both saw helplessness in each other’s eyes.
The misunderstanding between the two was so deep that they thought the other person had failed each other’s expectations, but they still loved each other.

Now, one of them had become a ghost, yet she still insisted on an answer.
Although one was alive, he was haunted by pain for most of his life.

Once all the misunderstandings were solved, the ghost cried, “Why are you so stupid…” He rushed into the fire, regardless of his life, just to protect his paintings.

“I didn’t write that letter back then.”

“I know,” Wei Ji replied in a soft tone then continued earnestly, “I remained single in my whole life.
I have never had an engagement with anyone else.”

The ghost smiled and said, “I know.”

After a while, Wei Ji and the portrait ghost simultaneously asked, “Can you forgive me?” When they knew they had the same idea, they laughed.

Wei Ji and the ghost thanked Ye Sui; after a while, Ye Sui and Chen Shu left the ward.
Ye Sui walked forward with a lot of emotion in her heart.

She looked at Chen Shu and suddenly said, “Chen Shu, if we have anything to say in the future, we must talk about it right away.”

She didn’t want to feel regret for her whole life because of a misunderstanding.

Chen Shu knew what Ye Sui was thinking, and he smiled.
“Good.”

Ye Sui continued, “If one of us has difficulties, it must be solved at once and not dragged to the next day.”

“No.” Ye Sui was still not assured, so she immediately added another sentence, “Can’t drag even half a day.”

Chen Shu’s eyes were dark and profound, staring intensely at Ye Sui.
“OK.”

Ye Sui thought for a while and stretched out her little finger in front of Chen Shu.
“Well, you and I will do a pinky swear.
We shouldn’t go back on our promise.”

Chen Shu lowered his eyes and looked at Ye Sui’s hand.
After a few seconds, Chen Shu extended his hand and slowly approached her.

As soon as he touched Ye Sui’s hand, her little finger bent slightly, and she hooked Chen Shu tightly.
At the same time, she said thoughtfully, “Look, we did the pinky swear.”

Chen Shu’s lips also curved.
“So, we can’t go back on our word.”

Her fingers were slender, while his fingers were long.
They gently hooked together, like a lifetime commitment.

A few days later, the police announced that the lost painting had been found.
But the portrait seemed to have changed.
The woman no longer had a sad face; instead, she was smiling.

Rumors spread like wildfire again, but an announcement diverted people’s attention.

Wei Ji, a master painter who had already stopped painting, had finished a new art, which would be displayed at the painting exhibition three days later.

The news stunned the netizens.

Master Wei was making a comeback.
His paintings were hard to find, so every influential family in the city wondered what the new work portrayed.

Everyone waited anxiously for these three days.
When the time came, they were shocked when the painting was displayed in front of everyone.

Although the woman in the painting only showed her side-profile, her facial features and contours were exactly the same as a person.

It was Ye Sui.

The Internet exploded.
So many people had asked Wei Ji to paint them, but he didn’t agree.
Why did he paint Ye Sui after exiting his seclusion?

Faced with many questions, Wei Ji only said one sentence: “Ye Sui is my benefactor.”

One sentence completely blocked out all other suspicions.
Wei Ji painted Ye Sui because she had helped him.

Everyone coincidentally had an idea: Somewhere along the line, it seemed as if all the impossibilities were gradually becoming possible for Ye Sui.

Was there anything else on Ye Sui that nobody could predict?

No one knew the answer, but time would prove everything.
