The duo eventually sold all the charcoal.

Or rather, Flint sold them- as Anne refused to go back to the same store…

At half the price.

Considering Anne had bought them for one-fourth of the same price and didn have to hire any guards along the way- they actually came out fairly richer.

Yet-

”Why are you sulking? ” Flint asked- walking just behind the demon.

”Im not. ”

Theyd also sold their cart and horse- almost for the same amount of money they bought it for.

And though Flint asked why theyd sold their ride- Anne refused to elaborate.

”Where are we even going? ”

He couldn see much-

It was hard to see and the smell was really started to make him gag-

It amazed Flint how humans could just adapt to any situation. After all, there were so many people around-

It also amazed him at just how bad his body sucked at adjusting but that was a different story.

”Guild hall. ”

”Oh… to sell those- ” Remembering about the things hed killed- Flint felt slightly bad.

But at the same time, he knew feeling bad wasn right.

Yet-

No, not feeling bad isn right. They were living things-

And killing living things isn right.

Thats what he thought.

But-

To survive one had to kill another.

And that was the truth.

Flint knew that.

Thats why-

He respected the dead.

Those whod died for another.

But that was also why-

He couldn forgive those who murder for no reason at all.

”This way, kid- ” Anne grabbed Flints collar- dragging him to the left.

Apparently, he was about to just walk in the opposite way-

Ring-

The door opened.

Rather large.

”And then- I punched him in the face! ”

”HAH- AHHH HAHHHH!! ”

”Refill! ” Slam!

Noisy.

Lots of people. Mostly men.

Burly men.

But also, burly women.

Few robed-

Most leather armored.

”Woah- it doesn smell in here… you were right, ” Flint looked around, amazed.

The door slammed closed.

”Course I was. ”

Adventurers.

Those who fight monsters- and guard people on the road. For money.

Originally, they were just a rowdy group with no order.

But the guild and the government came together, forming the Guild Hall- a central organization encompassing the whole continent- with branches in every major city… and sometimes even small cities-

”Are you registered as an adventurer- ” Flint said- looking around.

Rather big place-

Single storied- but really big-

Chairs, tables, stalls- and people!

”Im not. Not worth it; too many chores. ”

”But don they give you less money if you
e not- ”

Anne stared back- ”Can you like- stay quiet? ” Slightly troubled… ”Is something wrong? You never talk this much. ”

Which was true-

And in some way- perhaps Flint was forcing himself.

”Im sorry. I just- ” He went a bit quiet. ”Lets go. ”

They went over to a counter at the corner.

Turned in ears, fangs- and some broken things-

Got exactly eighty silvers in return.

Anne gave twenty to Flint, keeping the rest to herself.

In order to survive a single day- with food and shelter- one needed five silvers… so this was worth four whole days of living expense-

After all that?

The bear, the goblins, the fluffs- he had to kill a lot of monsters.

And yet-

At the end- this was all he got.

This is what all that many lives are worth?

Of course-

Just getting the money alone was surprising as he was just tagging alongside Anne because she wanted him to.

He did ask her why she was helping him but he never got a proper reply. She always had an excuse ready.

Given her strength- Anne didn need Flints help. And she didn really need anyone for anything either.

But-

She brought me out here just to help me get a better sense of the world?

Surely, life wasn so easy- and even he knew it.

Of course, Flint did have guesses.

Perhaps he was right.

Perhaps not.

But for now-

He followed Anne out of there.

”Its getting hazier. ”

The sun was about to set and that meant they couldn see well anymore.

The few people who were out, were running back inside-

”Yes, we should book an inn… ”

”But won it be expensive? ”

Anne snorted. ”Don worry, Im still going to bear your expenses even if I gave you pocket money… ”

Pocket money?

Flint grimaced a bit but-

Yeah-

He couldn argue.

***

They bought one room with two beds.

Standard.

It didn smell much inside.

And they dropped their things.

”Ill get our dinner… do you want something to drink? ” Anne said, being oddly generous.

”I don drink. And please bring back something that won poison me. ”

She rolled her eyes, leaving. ”I meant water or juice, you idiot… ”

Flint locked the wooden door-

Watching the sky from the window. Locked window-

Hazy.

They were on the second floor-

People were going about their day… as in, hastily running back to their homes with their lamps. Apparently, an open fire could light up the fog so flames weren allowed. Instead, everyone had magic blue heatless lamps.

And as the people ran around with those lights- they created quite the show-

To belong…

Flints mind wandered.

So many thoughts.

So many memories.

He still remembered the day- his parents smiled- and told him he was about to have a sibling.

Almost a year later- Maine was born.

A brat- crybaby and really annoying.

Yet-

Flint loved her.

He loved his sister- and he was willing to die for her.

Yet-

Yet-

She died.

Before his eyes-

Just like that.

The same for his parents-

His friends-

His relatives-

Everyone in the village-

Just dead.

And there was nothing he could do about it. Not then- and not now.

A sigh-

Flints blood boiled but at the same time- he didn really flare.

He was over all that.

Yeah, things happened.

But he didn know how they happened or who did this.

Needlessly overthinking and stressing out wasn going to solve the problem.

Right now- he needed to focus on three things.

One, finding out who did this-

Two- he needed money-

And three-

To exact revenge- he needed strength.

The money I can solve but-

But what about the strength part?

He could train-

He could try his best, but at the very end, he was just going to be cannon fodder in the way of someone who could destroy villages in a mere heartbeat.

Should I change classes?

Magic wasn going to be the answer either.

Granted that spell was strong but it required a substantial amount of focus along with half of his mana capacity.

And if somehow, he pulled off two spells on the same day-

Hed go through Mana Zero and faint on spot- not great for combat.

Hiring mercenaries-

Anne was strong and skilled.

With enough money, he could hire a bunch of mercenaries like her and-

But thats not good enough.

He could hire mercenaries, adventurers, or even people from the murdering guild.

But all that would take a lot of money. In the range of thousands of gold-

And not that just-

He could definitely gain a crazy amount of power if he chose the dark path-

Id have to sell my humanity-

But what was the point, if he couldn exact revenge, on his own- would it really-?

Knock- ”Its me- ”

”Coming. ”

So many worries- so many thoughts.

Yet-

Flint didn let anything show-

And with a moderate smile opened the door. ”Smells wonderful. ”
